Some people are sock skeptics. The idea of anything but plain white ankle socks strikes them as somehow wrong. Maybe these folks just think of socks as underwear for their feet, and don't want to draw attention to them.
But at Cute But Crazy, we try to help people break out of their shells when it comes to wearing socks. We've seen businessmen hesitantly pick out a couple of basic pairs, then come back a week later for something wilder. Some women will admire knee or over-the-knee socks, but then avoid buying them because they say they aren't sure how to wear them.
We love to offer style suggestions to help our customers look their best. Here are a few of them.
1. You don't always have to match.
We love matching socks to our outfits most of the time, but every so often it is fun to make a statement with some extreme pattern mixing. Fashionistas call it power clashing, and it can be incredibly eye-catching if done right. And truthfully, your legs don’t even need to match each other! We love a brand called Solmate Socks whose socks are all sold in purposefully mismatched pairs.
2. Socks are the new neckties.
Many men are forgoing ties at work as offices loosen their dress codes. As a result, wild socks have become an outlet for self-expression for everyone from George H.W. Bush to Justin Bieber. Forget about plain black dress socks — if you want to dress like the rich and powerful, or just express your creativity, you need a snazzy pair of socks. Check out ModSocks' original collection to see our unique designs for men, and buy a pair of your very own!
3. The socks-with-sandals taboo is outdated.
Okay, maybe this one is only true up here in the Pacific Northwest. But we shamelessly pair cute tabi socks with thong sandals and flip flops, knee socks with shorts and sandals, ankle socks with open-toed heels, and outdoorsy sandals with cotton or wool socks for dusty hikes. Experiment with looks and don’t worry about the haters.
4. Show them off!
You wouldn’t spend time putting together a great outfit only to hide it beneath a coat all day, so why cover up your beautiful socks? Pant legs can always be rolled up to show off a cute pair of oh, say, these little beauties. Or just make up a creative excuse for removing your footwear (“Darn, I think I have a rock in my shoe!”) and momentarily wow everyone around you with your stylish socks.
With these tips and your own creativity, you can improve your wardrobe and learn to express yourself through your socks. Don’t be afraid to take chances. Get out there, and find the perfect pair.
