The (Sock) Show Must Go On: A Big Announcement from Urania

Rachel Northrup McGee and Scotty McGee hold the 'Cute But Crazy' sock store sign while standing in front of The Purple Doorknob sock shop in Ellicottville, New York.

Hey there, sock fans!

If you’ve visited us online over the last few weeks, you probably noticed our virtual shelves were completely bare. You all went absolutely wild during our closing sale and cleaned us out down to the floorboards (seriously, y'all are amazing!).

We truly thought that was the final curtain, but the universe had other plans.

I am incredibly excited to announce that Cute But Crazy Socks has been acquired by The Purple Doorknob and is officially reopening later this month!

🛑 First things first: No, your eyes do not deceive you, and no, our website hasn't been hacked!

We are officially passing the baton — and the keys to crazysocks.com — to a spectacular new crew led by my longtime business peer and fellow sock seller Rachel Northrup McGee.

A Full-Circle Moment 15 Years in the Making

Fifteen years ago, before I packed up and moved to Bellingham, I owned a little shop in Ellicottville, New York called The Purple Doorknob. And it sold — you guessed it — SOCKS!

In 2015, Rachel bought The Purple Doorknob from me and turned it into an absolute sockcess! Now, eleven years later, she and her partner (shoutout to Scotty!) are stepping in to take over Cute But Crazy. I am thrilled that it will remain a proudly independent, woman-owned small business.

What does this mean for YOU?

It means your favorite sock site isn't going away! Rachel and her team are currently working madly behind the scenes (we're calling this brief pause our "Intermission") to restock the shelves and plot a seriously amazing Act II.

Plus, they are dedicated to carrying on our legacy of giving back — including a pledge to continue supporting NAMI (the National Alliance on Mental Illness)! We will be sitting down for a full interview with Rachel soon to tell you all about their upcoming plans, so stay tuned.

What does this mean for ME, Urania?

If you’ve followed our story in recent months, you know I planned to step away from the sock shop to focus on my other passions.

You can find me doing what I love:

  • ModSocks: I’m still creating beautiful, wild sock designs from Bellingham (and yes, they will still be sold right here at crazysocks.com).
  • Nelson’s Market: For the Bellingham locals, I’ll be in York stewarding our iconic neighborhood corner store and diner.
  • Feline Diplomacy: Our shop cat Mausley has retired from his role as warehouse supervisor and has moved home with me, where he has begun to reach a tenuous peace with my other two cats, Louie and Emo.

But as for running the day-to-day operations of Cute But Crazy? I am officially hanging up my hat and turning the stage over to the incredible direction of Rachel and her crew. Your feet are in excellent hands!

Thank you for giving us such a crazy-good run over the years. We love you all. The stage is set, the lights are low and the show isn’t over yet!

Excited to find out what happens next? Make sure you're signed up for our email newsletter to get your front-row seats.

Cheers,

U
